TNPSC Group-1

The Group-1 exams, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), aim to select individuals for top-level government positions within the state.

1. Steps/Stages in Selection Process for Group 1

The Group-1 exams take place in three stages:

Preliminary Exam (Group-1):

   1. It’s an objective type paper with multiple-choice questions.
   2. The exam is of 300 marks in total, and the minimum passing score is:
            (i)Reserved category (OBC, SC/ST) – (90/300) marks.
            (ii)General category – (120/300) marks.
   3. No negative marking.

Main Exam & Interview: 

   1. The exam is in descriptive (written) format.
   2. And it is of four papers:
        a) Paper I – Tamil Eligibility Test (100 marks)
            -Minimum passing score is (40/100) marks.
            -Paper I marks will not be included in the overall ranking.
        b) Paper II, III & IV – General studies (250marks – each paper)
            -Interview & record for 100 marks (not included for qualifying marks)
            -Reserved category (OBC, SC/ST) – (255/850) marks.
            -General category – (340/850) marks

Note: Please note that for Candidates who pass a Degree in distance education, you must have passed SSLC (10th) and then Higher Secondary (+2). Getting a degree in distance education after a pass in SSLC (10th exam) will end up with disqualification.

Scale of Pay:

The salary pay scale for the TNPSC group-1 position is designated as follows
Pay Scale: Rs.56,100 to Rs.2,05,700

Application Fees:

  1. One-time Registration Fee: Rs.150/ – (valid for 5 years)
  2. Examination Fees: Rs.100/-
  3. Main Exam Fee: Rs.200/-

Important Documents needed for the application:

Certificates to be submitted are the following:
  1. Degree, HSC, SSLC Certificates or relevant Qualifications for Educational Verification.
  2. Community Certificate– for categories like SC/ST/OBC for benefits.
  3. Nativity Certificate to confirm your place of origin or residence (if necessary).
  4. No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in other programs or activities (only if required).
  5. Disability Certificate for applicants with disabilities to get specific benefits.
  6. If PSTM (Person Studied in Tamil Medium) is sort documents to prove the same.
  7. In the case of widows, a Destitute Widow Certificate.
  8. In the case of the Physically Handicapped, a Certificate from the authorized/competent medical officer with the necessary annexure.

Note: To qualify under the PSTM quota, the candidate must have completed their education in Tamil Medium from SSLC, 12th, and degree.

ID and Photographs needed for Group 1:

  1. Your Photo with your signature on it should be uploaded – (165×123) pixels in dimension, and below 50 kb in jpg format
  2. A scanned copy of the signature should be uploaded – (80×125) pixels in dimension, and below 20 kb in jpg format.
  3. Candidates are required to submit Identification Documents such as Aadhar, driver’s license, PAN card, passport, or voter in the application and they must also carry the hard copy of the ID which is uploaded, along with their hall ticket on the day of the Exam.

Documents needed for verification after selection:

  1. Educational Qualification Certificates: Your graduation certificate and your SSLC (10th) certificate for Age proof.
  2. Community Certificate: To specify your community as (SC, ST, OBC, & others)
  3. Nativity Certificate (if necessary): If you’re claiming to be a resident of Tamil Nadu, submit a nativity certificate.
  4. Differently Abled Certificate (if necessary): If you have a disability, include a certificate to ensure it.
  5. No Objection Certificate (NOC): If you have a current job, get permission from your Manager.
  6. Photo ID Proof: Show a valid photo ID like an Aadhar card, voter ID, passport, or driver’s license.
  7. Passport-sized Photographs: Attach recent photos (colour) as instructed.
  8. Payment Receipt: As proof of application fee payment.
  9. Self-Declaration Form: Complete a form saying you don’t have any criminal history and disciplinary actions.
  10. Other Supporting Documents: These are mentioned in the official notice, like experience certificates (if needed).
