The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), Japan, is providing the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Research Students to international students aspiring to pursue graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students (either regular students or non-regular students). Successful scholars will be eligible for a monthly stipend of up to JPY 145,000, along with additional benefits.
Eligibility of Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Research Students
To meet eligibility criteria, applicants must:
1. Be born on or after April 2, 1989.
2. Exhibit a willingness to learn the Japanese language.
For Master’s/Doctoral course (first phase):
3. Have completed 16 years of school education in countries other than Japan.
4. Successfully finished a program with a standard study period of three years or more at a university or equivalent educational institution outside Japan.
5. Attain a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
6. Achieve a minimum of 70% marks in graduation.
For Doctoral course (second phase):
7. Hold an overseas degree equivalent to a master’s or professional degree.
8. Graduate from a recognized university.
9. Engage in a research study at a university or research centre (including overseas universities and research centres) for two years or more.
10. Be acknowledged for having academic competency equivalent to individuals with a master’s degree from a graduate school.
11. Secure a minimum of 70% marks in a master’s degree.
Note: For detailed information, please refer to the ‘Scholarship Detail Document.’ A person with dual nationality holding Japanese nationality and residing outside of Japan at the time of application is eligible to apply as long as they select the nationality of the other country and renounce their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan (the acquisition of student status)..
