Union Public Service Commission (UPSC):

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the primary central agency in India responsible for conducting a wide range of examinations. Notably, UPSC administers the prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE), a highly competitive test that serves as the gateway to top-tier government services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Additionally, UPSC plays a pivotal role in recruiting candidates for defence services. UPSC is an independent and autonomous body it doesn’t come under any Ministry or any Secretary. UPSC exam is to select the candidates for all India Services which are supposed to be the top posts in India.

Organization of UPSC:

The UPSC consists of a Chairman and ten members, all the members will be appointed by the President of India. Each member serves a term of six years or until they reach the age of 65.

Selection process:

The UPSC exam is of three stages :

  1. Preliminary Exam
  2. Main Exam
  3. Interview

A) Prelims exam:
The minimum qualifying marks for the UPSC Preliminary Examination will differ by category, with General category candidates requiring a minimum of 88.22/200 marks, SC candidates with 74.08/200 marks, ST candidates with 69.35/200 marks, and OBC candidates with 87.54/200 marks.

B) Mains exam:
The minimum marks required to qualify for the UPSC Mains examination will differ by category, with General category candidates requiring 736/1750 marks, EWS candidates requiring 68.71/750 marks, OBC candidates needing 698/1750 marks, SC candidates requiring 680/1750 marks, and ST candidates requiring 682/1750 marks.

The candidates are selected based on the total marks secured in the Main Examinations and Interviews. UPSC selections are purely on merit combined with Quota.

C) Interview:
There is no specified minimum qualifying marks for the interview or Personality Test.

OBC – Non-Creamy Layer (NCL)

Non Creamy Layer on OBC, are those whose parents have an Annual income of less than 8 lakhs.

Pay ScaleThe pay scale of CSE candidates post-wise:

IAS: Rs.56,100 – Rs.2,50,000

IPS: Rs.56,100 – Rs.2,25,000

IFS: Rs.60,000 – Rs.2,40,000 (The pay scale differs based on the country they are appointed).

The pay scale of CAPF & AC candidates post-wise:

  • Border Service Force
  • Central Reserve Police Force
  • Central Industrial Security Force
  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police
  • Sashastra Seema Bal

All the above give posts have the same pay scale of (Rs.21700 – Rs.69100iii)

The pay scale of Indian Engineering Services:

  • CATEGORY I – CIVIL ENGINEERING Group-A Services
  • CATEGORY II – MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Group-A/B Services
  • CATEGORY III – ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Group-A/B Services/Posts           
  • CATEGORY IV- ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING Group-A/B Services 

    All these posts have the same pay scale of Rs.15,600 – Rs.90000
Documents needed for verification:
  1. Scanned photograph of yourself
  2. Government-issued photo ID card (Aadhar Card, Voter Card, PAN Card, Passport, Driving Licence, or any other State/Central Government-issued photo ID card)
  3. Proof of age, which can be a matriculation or secondary school leaving certificate
  4. Certificate of educational qualification (e.g., degree certificate)
  5. EWS Certificate, if eligible and seeking an EWS reservation
